For the second consecutive year, the Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys have the best junior varsity A/AA boys volleyball team in the province.
Les Roys were able to take home the banner after defeating the Rosenort Redhawks in straight sets (25-20, 25-18) in the final. The Redhawks were one of only two teams to take sets off Les Roys in the tournament, winning a set 26-24 during their match-up in pool play.
Gabrielle-Roy were a perfect 6-0 across the tournament, which was hosted in Hamiota. The only other team to win a set against Les Roys was Warren in the quarterfinal matchup.
The tournament all-star selections were littered with Les Roys players. Jacob Boisjoli, Martin de Moissac and Alek Ouimet were given the honour after the tournament, with David Lemoine taking home tournament MVP.
The Gabrielle-Roy boys junior varsity team weren’t the only ones from the region competing for a provincial banner this weekend, although they were the only ones to bring one back with them.
In the A/AA girls junior varsity provincials, the girls counterpart for Gabrielle-Roy were felled in the quarterfinals by the host Major Pratt Trojans.
Two of the region’s teams made the trip to Northlands Parkway Collegiate for the AAA junior varsity boys provincials. Springfield and Steinbach Christian School battled into the playoffs after pool play, and were even set to face each other in a semi-final, but both lost in their respective quarterfinal.
Steinbach Christian School lost to the eventual tournament champion Neelin Spartans, while Springfield was felled by the Louis-Riel Voyageurs.
The AAA girls junior varsity provincials were hosted in Altona, with the Niverville Panthers also losing in the quarterfinals. The Panthers battled hard in pool play, but were unable to do better than a 1-2 record, setting up a quarterfinal with the John Taylor Pipers, which they lost 2-0 (25-17, 26-24).
For the AAAA classification, the highest in Manitoba, the Steinbach Regional Secondary School Sabres (SRSS) teams couldn’t break through for either the boys or girls junior varsity provincials.
The boys season would end in the quarterfinals, losing to the eventual champion Glenlawn Lions in straight sets. The Lions didn’t lose a set until the final against River East.
The girls finished with a 2-1 record in pool play, defeating the Kelvin Clippers in a knockout game and the Westwood Warriors in a quarter-final match to earn their way to a semi-final. Their run would end at the hands of the Lord Selkirk Royals in straight sets. The Royals lost to the Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens in the final.
The girls varsity SRSS and Niverville seasons ended Nov. 26, as the two teams were felled in the quarterfinals of the AAAA varsity provincials by Lord Selkirk and Vincent Massey (Brandon) respectively.
The SRSS boys varsity season is still alive, with the Sabres set to take on Vincent Massey (Winnipeg) Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at the University of Manitoba for one of the province’s semi-finals. St. Paul’s and Lord Selkirk will battle in the other semi-final, with the winners facing off Dec. 5.
Varsity provincials below AAAA get underway this weekend, with teams in action around the province, including in Steinbach, as the Steinbach Christian School Flames are hosting the boys varsity AAA provincials. The final is set to be played Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.
