Hockey fans get taste of speed skating during MJHL intermission

Cassidy Dankochik 2 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022

It wasn’t just the Niverville Nighthawks and Steinbach Pistons who competed at the Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre (CRRC) Dec. 9.

While the Manitoba Junior Hockey (MJHL) players waited in their locker rooms during the first intermission, the skaters of the Eastman Speed Skating Club went out for a series of demo races on a freshly flooded ice surface.

Greg Bieber hosted the extended intermission, giving play-by-play and explaining the sport to fans inside the CRRC. The Eastman Speed Skating club also practices out of the facility, after relocating there from Steinbach two years ago.

“Niverville got an introduction to the sport of speed skating in their own backyard,” Bieber said, noting across the races, fans got a chance to see kids at various levels strut their stuff.

Figures key to SRSS football advancement inducted to program’s hall of fame

Cassidy Dankochik 5 minute read Monday, Dec. 19, 2022

Some of the people critical to moving Steinbach Regional Secondary School’s (SRSS) football program to the top division in the province were honoured during the team’s annual banquet Nov. 8.

Players Patrick Maendel and Austin Buhler were inducted into the program’s hall of fame, alongside coach Don Cooper to make up the class of 2022.

Maendel couldn’t make it to the ceremony, but program coordinator Jamie Peters was quick to heap praise on the running back, who helped lead the Sabres in back to back division two championship game appearances in 2014 and 2015.

“(Maendel) was crucial in building the program after it moved from division three to division two,” Peters said.

He capped it off by scoring the only touchdown of the game in a semi-final victory against St. Paul's and being named game MVP in the championship game, a 16-0 victory over Kelvin. Sabres football find silver linings in winless seasons

Cassidy Dankochik 6 minute read Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022

It was a rough season for the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) Sabres football teams, as both their varsity and junior varsity crews were winless on the season.

That didn’t stop optimism from flying around during the team’s annual banquet Dec. 8. It was the program’s first-such banquet since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The optimism wasn’t without merit, according to program head Jamie Peters. It was Steinbach’s first season playing in the top division of Manitoba high school football since the pandemic and the quest to build the program back to the highest level in the province has only just begun.

No players on either SRSS roster had experience in division one football.

If you head out to an Eastman Sharks U18 AA game, one thing’s for sure. You’re going to watch an outstanding performance in net.

The team is leading the AA division of Manitoba hockey, on the strength of only allowing 17 goals this season. They’re tied in points with the St Vital Victorias, who despite their similar success in the win/loss column, have given up 33 goals this season.

It’s all thanks to the goaltending tandem of Rhyan Beardy and Emily Ritchot, alongside a commitment to team defense.

“We’ve got an extremely strong duo of goaltenders, and a really, really strong defensive core,” Sharks head coach Nick Audette said.

Altona-native Matthew Thiessen was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference goaltender of the week Dec. 6, after backstopping the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to a split with Colorado College.

Thiessen saved 52 shots over the weekend series, including a 24-save shutout Dec. 3 to help the Bulldogs return to 0.500 on the season.

It was Thiessen’s first collegiate shutout.

As the season comes to a close, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA) has honoured volleyball players from the region.

On Nov. 30, Mackenzie Lowden of the Lorette Scorpions was named as one of the two Dairy Farmers of Manitoba athletes of the week for helping her team win the Zone 13 championship.

The Scorpions also enjoyed other tournament success this season, winning a bronze medal at the Neelin Dig tournament and the consolation bracket at Niverville’s tournament.

While listed as a left side hitter, Lorette Collegiate athletic director Michelle Marinelli said in a MHSAA news release it was Lowden’s versatility which helped the Scorpions find success. Lowden also played as a setter and right side throughout the season.

Some of the country’s best curlers came to Morris for the 15th Dekalb SuperSpiel, hosted Dec. 2 - 5 at the Morris Curling Club.

As is usually the case in Olympic years, many teams have had major turnover in their rosters, and the two winners, Team Matt Dunstone and Team Abby Ackland, are no exception.

Dunstone, who represented Saskatchewan, winning two bronze medals at the Brier in 2020 and 2021, now curls out of Winnipeg and has a brand new lineup, featuring Colton Lott, B.J. Neufeld and Ryan Harnden.

Dunstone defeated a new-look Reid Carruthers team, after the skip split with Mike McEwan. Carruthers is now skipping a team featuring Jason Gunnlaugson, Derek Samagalski and Connor Njegovan, but couldn’t get going in the final, losing 7-2.

Sabres survive Crusaders to win provincial championship

All season, the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) boys volleyball team bench and fans would yell “hard for two,” throwing two fingers in the air and signaling to the team on the court anytime they were two points away from winning a set.

Players raised their fingers after the boys volleyball AAAA provincial final at the University of Manitoba, but this time it was only one pointed to the sky in victory, as Steinbach cemented their place as the best high school volleyball team in the province.

The Sabres were able to defeat the St Paul’s Crusaders 3-2 (25-23, 25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 16-14) in a dramatic five set battle Dec. 5. Steinbach took the first two sets before the Crusaders stormed back to force a decisive fifth set, even earning a match point before Steinbach rattled off three points in a row to take the banner, prompting many of the SRSS students and fans who made the trip to the University of Manitoba to rush the gym floor in celebration.

It was Steinbach’s first boys varsity volleyball championship since 2014.

The 2022/2023 season for the St Malo Warriors is off to a slow start, at least when it comes to the calendar.

The Capital Region Junior Hockey League (CRJHL) franchise had to cancel a few games after ice plant renovations at their arena were not completed in time to start the season.

The Warriors have only played 11 games so far this season, the fewest in the league and are sitting in third place in the standings.

“It’s been tough,” Ralph Collette, the team’s head coach and manager said after a game in Beausejour.

For the second consecutive year, the Gabrielle-Roy Les Roys have the best junior varsity A/AA boys volleyball team in the province.

Les Roys were able to take home the banner after defeating the Rosenort Redhawks in straight sets (25-20, 25-18) in the final. The Redhawks were one of only two teams to take sets off Les Roys in the tournament, winning a set 26-24 during their match-up in pool play.

Gabrielle-Roy were a perfect 6-0 across the tournament, which was hosted in Hamiota. The only other team to win a set against Les Roys was Warren in the quarterfinal matchup.

The tournament all-star selections were littered with Les Roys players. Jacob Boisjoli, Martin de Moissac and Alek Ouimet were given the honour after the tournament, with David Lemoine taking home tournament MVP.

It took until nearly 11:30 p.m., but the Steinbach Regional Secondary School varsity boys team was able to equal their counterparts, winning a South Central Athletic Conference (SCAC) banner inside their home gym.

With the girls’ match going a full five sets, including a 19-17 final set, the boys match didn’t begin until well into the evening.

While there was plenty of drama to be found in the girls varsity final, the varsity Sabres boys team was (relatively) more comfortable finding their way to the championship banner, winning 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19) over the Dakota Lancers.

Both the boys and girls SCAC finals featured Steinbach against Dakota, with Steinbach using a raucous home-court advantage to lock up the varsity SCAC championships.

When the Providence Pilots women’s soccer team opened up their training for the 2022 season, oftentimes head coach Tory Walker would be running the team through their paces, practicing set pieces.

That hard work paid off in a big way at the National Christian Colleges Athletic Conference (NCCAA) tier two national championships. The Pilots went down to Florida, and came back with a trophy, defeating the top ranked Great Lakes Chritian College Crusaders 2-0 in the final.

Both goals in the match came from second-half set pieces, with a corner and free kick delivered by Laurianne Chiasson providing the difference.

“(Set pieces) were a big part of where I think we needed to grow as a team, and I’ve been preaching that to (the players) since basically week one,” head coach Troy Walker said after returning to Manitoba.
