As the season comes to a close, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA) has honoured volleyball players from the region.
On Nov. 30, Mackenzie Lowden of the Lorette Scorpions was named as one of the two Dairy Farmers of Manitoba athletes of the week for helping her team win the Zone 13 championship.
The Scorpions also enjoyed other tournament success this season, winning a bronze medal at the Neelin Dig tournament and the consolation bracket at Niverville’s tournament.
While listed as a left side hitter, Lorette Collegiate athletic director Michelle Marinelli said in a MHSAA news release it was Lowden’s versatility which helped the Scorpions find success. Lowden also played as a setter and right side throughout the season.
“Mackenzie is in integral part of this team and strives to be the best she can be no matter where she is playing,” Marinelli said.
“She always encourages her teammates and holds everyone including herself to high standards when it comes to playing.”
The MHSAA also released a list of the top 10 volleyball student athletes in the Province Dec. 2, with Steinbach Regional Secondary School students making the list on both the boys and girls side.
Grade 11 right-side Sienna Driedger was named as the province’s seventh best girls volleyball student athlete on the list, with the entry noting her strong offensive attributes and leadership on the court.
Ashlee Friesen was named as an honourable mention.
Grade 12 setter Boston Thiessen (seventh) and grade 11 right-side Nik Reimer (10th) made the top 10 list for the boys side.
Thiessen was praised for his efficiency as a setter and ability to run an offense. Reimer earned the accolade for his ability to both hit and block.
Hudson Rempel was named as an honourable mention.
